Director of Communications

Morreale Communications has an opportunity for a Director of Communications to join our award-winning team to support strategic communications and public involvement projects. The Director of Communications will work closely with project teams to develop and execute comprehensive communications plans that include content development, earned media, social media, stakeholder engagement and outreach campaigns intended to reach diverse audiences using a combination of traditional and emerging resources. 

This person should be able to bring new ideas and a fresh perspective into communicating highly technical materials into digestible terms for public consumption. This position works closely with clients to engage target audiences to educate them on project goals and benefits and ultimately build consensus to shape public policy. The ideal candidate is a strong writer and is comfortable speaking in public and facilitating meetings with top-level executives. Communications experience with government, transportation and infrastructure, highly regulated industries or healthcare is preferred. 

This person will collaborate with the project team and designers to transform complex issues into visual stories and compelling narratives. Experience working with diverse community groups, building stakeholder engagement plans, coalition building and securing earned and digital media is a must. This person is a strategic thinker and able to manage multiple project teams, scopes and resources. Monitoring progress of deliverables and tracking metrics will be critical for a candidate to be successful in this role.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide account strategy and counsel as well as generate fresh, thoughtful and actionable ideas while leading projects and campaigns.

  • Develop and implement comprehensive communications involving strategic planning, marketing and campaign management, media relations and crisis communications.

  • Develop and manage comprehensive and strategic internal and external communications and public engagement strategy to engage diverse audiences and stakeholders.

  • Generate original content for online and print that engages diverse audiences and stakeholders.

  • Spearhead client marketing and promotional campaigns, including creating, editing and dissemination publications, reports, website content social media newsletters and print materials.

  • Develop and manage execution of thought leadership communications strategies and plans to support client objectives.

  • Implement innovative and targeted communications strategies, messaging and tactics that engage and deliver against client business strategies.

  • Identify appropriate external forums to convey client stories and support client spokespeople for speaking engagements.

  • Prepare, write and edit press releases, byline articles, media alerts, form letters and other forms of external communications.

  • Maintain media contacts to secure earned media placements.

  • Interface, communicate and provide counsel with clients.

  • Provide guidance to senior executives on communications approaches, media relations and coordinate print, radio, and television appearances.

  • Provide expertise on day-to-day media relations activities for clients.

  • Maintain relationships with media, government and industry officials to promote client initiatives in the press.

Position Qualifications

  • 8+ years professional experience in the areas of communications, government, healthcare, regulated industries, transportation and/or journalism.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking and the ability to convey complex, technical topics in a clear and concise manner.

  • Skilled at working with minimal supervision on high-profile projects.

  • Strong familiarity with government and stakeholders.

  • Deep experience in media relations, government or statewide communications campaigns is preferred.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Public Policy, Communications, Political Science or related field.

Initially, this position will be remote, and then depending on timing could either report out of the Chicago office located in Edison Park or downtown Chicago. Must have reliable transportation and be willing to travel as needed to client offices.  

Job Type: Full-Time 

Salary Range: $80,000-$100,000 (negotiable based on experience)
